This picture was not easy for the author; he painted it for four years. He finished work on it only in 1895. After all, it was not by chance that he decided to write this particular picture, because the liberation from the Tatar khan turned out to be very significant for Russia. In addition, the author himself was born in Siberia, so he felt deep feelings for his homeland.

The canvas of the painting depicts the battle of the brave Yermak detachment with the Kuchumovites. It is clearly seen that the Russians are gaining the upper hand. The hero himself was not singled out by the artist in any way, as though reporting that the commander was not too distinguished himself from the units of his warriors. The only thing that gave us the chieftain was his hand, or rather a gesture that firmly and decisively sends his troops to battle and attack.

The faces of the Cossacks, on the contrary, express a storm of various emotions - an indestructible will and desire for victory and freedom. It does not matter that the battle is in full swing, but it is already clearly visible how and how the battle will end. The defeated, hordes of Tatars flee in panic from the battlefield.

Not without hidden intent, a gloomy landscape was also chosen for the fight - the autumn sky in gray tones, the fast waters of the river are also not transparent, the riverbank is slippery and clay. Looking at this cloudy image of a real battle, you involuntarily become a participant in it, an observer, a fan ...

Only brilliant gun trunks remain distinct and flashes of shots billow over the battlefield with pink clouds. A special place is also defined for a blood stain. It was the Cossack who got the scarlet stain as a sign of devotion and self-sacrifice in the name of the Motherland and honor.

Even a simple viewer who is not tempted by art will find a lot of feelings and emotions in this picture, will begin to better accept, understand and perceive Russian culture, think about what our ancestors fought for and what goals they achieved.

The canvas “breathes” a war, an all-consuming battle, in which there are neither winners nor losers. But still it becomes clear that the bloodshed could not have been avoided. Therefore, it was she who became the savior for the people - a war washing with blood and watering with tears.

This picture is one of the great monuments of Russian history, which has preserved the memories of people who will never tell us about this event.
