Jean Baptiste Chardin painted many famous paintings, among which is the painting Laundresses, written in 1737.

In a dark room, only half lit by daylight, bright and relatively bright colors are painted foreground. In the picture he is represented by a young washerwoman, a child, most likely her son, and sitting with a cat, clutched under his paws.

The girl is busy with the usual and everyday work - washing. Each of her actions has been repeated hundreds of times, and she does not pay attention to her occupation, but only looks with a peaceful look out the window, as if with the hope of seeing imminent changes there. A simple and hardworking girl also wants to break out of all the life surrounding her, to change a modest and gloomy room to admiring mansions. Her face even shows a small smile, caused by all these fantasies.

The remaining characters in the picture are quite happy with what they have: the child enjoys the activity that his mother invented for him - blowing soap bubbles, and the cat - a quiet sleep. Behind the door we see the second laundress hanging clothes, but we can only guess about her thoughts.

As befits a true artist, Chardin pays special attention to all the details of the picture, which allow us to convey all the burdens of the lives of ordinary people: a wooden laundry tub, a brown-black copper basin standing on the floor, a mortar - he paints all this with care, with which the most picturesque portraits were drawn.

Jean Baptiste Chardin was a man who loved to work seriously, without cunning. Purposefulness, perseverance, combined with the talent that he possessed by nature, allowed him to achieve great heights in the world of art. So, in this picture, he depicted just one day in the life of a simple people, watching which any viewer sympathizes with the heavy lot of his mother, smiles indulgently, looking at the child, and plunges into the depths of the picture with all these household objects, which, as living as possible convey the atmosphere of the picture.
