The painting was painted by the artist in 1871. This canvas is the first of the large-scale works of young Repin.
This interpretation of the scene from the Gospel. We see a situation when Jesus Christ comes to the house where the girl died. The artist masterfully conveyed the extraordinary surprise and fright of his parents. They are still hoping for a miracle. The scene depicted is conveyed in such a way that there is a sense of importance and significance of the event.
Repin for a very long time did not want to tackle this plot. He suggested that this topic was alien to him. And only then, when he remembered his sister, could he be inspired by this topic and present it as a really real situation that happened in life.
To the right and deep, everything is deliberately obscured, which conveys an extraordinary silence and arouses a feeling of painful expectation. Relatives of the girl are depicted in the shade, as they are secondary characters. The girl and Jesus Christ who came with incredible expressiveness are highlighted. This technique correctly places emphasis, and also directs our eyes to the main place in the picture.

Christ is very natural, his face is calm and wise in his own greatness. His hands are completely ordinary, like a simple person. Gestures are incredibly simple, but really filled with solemnity. The girl seems to be sleeping, but not dead. Here, the viewer again comes into contact with such a favorite topic for Repin as the theme of awakening. In many creations we see sleeping.

Father is also incredibly significant in the picture. Repin's psychology is most fully reflected in it. The beauty and sorrow of old age is also felt.
All colors are incredibly restrained and at the same time as harmonious as possible. All this approaches the dramatic scene that became the theme of the canvas.
Repin created this picture, being under the strongest impression of Beethoven and his “Moonlight Sonata”, therefore the creation turned out to be so powerful. This canvas is called full of secrets and mysteries.
