The theme of the Nativity of Christ constantly dominated various artists at different times. But each of them had a completely different vision of this event. So in Botticelli it is very peculiar. It seems to be all the same, everything is familiar to us, but the artist uses a little different - mysticism.

The thing is that this painting was written in 1500, that is, just at the time when many predicted the end of the world. This has long since become fashionable: as soon as the new century arrives, the prophecies of the imminent death of the Universe immediately begin. And just then Botticelli wrote this painting, his penultimate painting.

Take a closer look. Yes, it’s not like the traditional interpretation of the well-known Christmas scene. Although the artist left the main thing unchanged: the baby in the nursery, mother and father are nearby. Even the animals remained in place, but that's all else. See how many angels are around! Angels on earth who show the shepherds to the Holy Family, angels in the foreground are paintings that kiss and hug in joy all with the same sages. And of course the angels who dance in a circle in heaven.

Please note that in the hands of the angels the olive is the twigs of the world. Botticelli did not forget about the devil either: below in both corners there is a small demon who, as it were, hides in the crevices of the earth and, as it were, watches what is happening.

Of particular note are the three angels sitting on the roof. They also have olive in their hands, but pay attention to the color of their clothes. It is not for nothing that they are dressed in different colors. And really not in vain. Green, red, white - grace, truth and justice. So there is symbolism here. The canvas is directly crammed with symbols. Yes, and the olive is also not in vain in the hands, it was used to decorate temples during the time of Botticelli.

Amazing canvas with amazing elements of mysticism.
