The French fauvist Henri Matisse in 1908 painted the next canvas by order of Sergei Schukin.

Fauvism as a new art movement did not exist for long, but managed to prove itself quite vividly in the paintings of painters. This style of image performance mixed in itself several components and gave rise to rich avant-garde paintings. To understand Fauvism, just look at the "Red Room" Matisse.

By means of expressing and conveying his inner state, the artist chose color. As is known by the name of the painting, the main color on it is red. Both the tablecloth and the wall are made in one color scheme. Moreover, even the ornament on these surfaces is the same - dark blue oriental floral patterns. The greenery outside the window does not extinguish the strikingly bright scarlet shade of the canvas. Small flowers and blossoming white branches of trees bring harmony and tranquility to this stunning picture.

Spatial construction is primitivistic. In the picture, there is only a hint of volumetricity and multidimensionality. The flat-painted figure of a woman and the trees outside the window are combined with chairs, a table, dishes and a one-story house in the distance, depicted with a perspective in mind.

Fauvism set itself the task of showing enthusiastic joy from the contemplation of life. And Matisse in the "Red Room" was able to realize this idea as well as possible. The picture is decorative, energetic, optimistic.

The sharp color changes, elements of ancient art and primitivism are perfectly combined and create a concentrated picture of the original talent of the French master. The interior blooms with an amazing palette and fruits with drinks on the table are calling to enjoy the gifts of life.

At first, the work was called “Harmony in Blue,” but the artist subsequently transformed the paints on the canvas, resulting in a masterpiece that many loved.
