The painting was created in 1509 - 1511.
Raphael dedicated his fresco to the theme of poetry, which has never faded at all times. In the very center we see the famous Parnassus. Apollo plays the flute. He was surrounded by muses. Each of them has in their hands the object with which she was usually portrayed. All the writers and poets of different eras gathered here.
The painter sought to convey the magical effect of music. He will use this motive in his work more than once. He makes his first attempt at the creation of Parnassus. This creation combines maximum grace and genuine greatness. It is difficult to find a more harmonious combination of them.
The composition of the picture is multi-figured. I would like to consider it, figuring out who was honored to be portrayed on this genuine masterpiece. In front of the viewer are incredibly complex spatial-type groups formed by sages, philosophers and poets. They are located amidst a grandiose landscape and scenery, striking in the splendor of architectural forms.
The strict symmetry of the arranged groups gives the entire depiction of the artist a harmonious unity. There is no sense of disunity. All heroes are united by an important theme of art and its impact on a person.
The wealth of colors is impressive. Raphael masterfully prescribes each figure. For him, portrait resemblance to those people whom he portrays is most important. This is necessary so that the viewer can understand the intention of the artist. Outfits of people are painted with incredible scrupulousness. The folds of tissue are almost tangible.
Rafael shows us his own ideal world, in which only the wisdom of each person, his self-confidence is important. We see what the artist has been dreaming of for so long. Man must be noble and necessarily free. The painting “Parnassus” did not accidentally become a real masterpiece, impressive not a single generation of viewers.
